Who We Are
What is Aztec Farms?
Aztec Farms strives to be a significant player in both the production and education of local and sustainable agriculture. We have been given the great privilege of improving our community by way of the rock-hard soils within the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve. Our ultimate goal is to provide a sound infrastructure that students, faculty and community members can build upon to make our nation more food secure. After learning theory and methods in the classroom, Aztec Farms provides a hands-on opportunity and challenges us to use that knowledge to improve the health of our society, our school, and ourselves.
Our goals at Aztec Farms:
- To grow pesticide-free produce that students and the San Diego State University community can eat!
- Establish a student run farm that can benefit all future participants
- Educate the public about America’s food system and inform them on how they can make better decisions when it comes to what they eat
- Establish key partnerships with major players on the campus
- Achieve certification of our produce, oranges, and avocados
- Sell our produce, oranges, and avocados back to the University and community through the Farmer’s Market
- Set an example of small scale sustainable farming practices and be able to share our learning experience with others on an educational level
- Learn how agricultural products are grown through hands-on experience from seed to plate and be able to share that knowledge with others
- Develop a deeper understanding of the problems created by current unsustainable agricultural practices and ultimately be able to contribute to solving them
